Samsung just unveiled a brand new component that provides a large edge on the iPhone
Samsung on Wednesday unveiled a completely new smartphone ingredient that will equip Galaxy phones soon.
It’s unclear at the moment what Samsung devices can get the brand new nick the coming year, but it definately is a smartphone part that Apple does not have for that iPhone, which could present an exciting marketing benefit to Samsung for more than a year.
That’s the Exynos Modem 5100 5G nick which will equip Samsung’s first 5G handset the coming year. We know from Samsung the first Galaxy phone to provide 5G support the coming year will not be the Galaxy S10, but we do not know what it’s said to be. It’s likely Galaxy flagships launching within the other half of 2019, in addition to all future high-finish Samsung phones and tablets, will pack 5G support.
Apple, meanwhile, needs to delegate 5G modems for that iPhone from a 3rd party, with Apple and Qualcomm to be the likely manufacturers of these components. Even Samsung may need to use Qualcomm modems inside future 5G phones that’ll be operated by next-gen Qualcomm processors, such as the Snapdragon 855 that’s rumored to debut next. The Exynos Modem 5100 will probably be combined with the following-gen Exynos chips from Samsung.
Samsung states the Modem 5100 may be the industry’s first 5G modem that’s “fully suitable for third generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 15 (Rel.15), probably the most up-to-date standard specs for 5G New Radio (5G-NR).”
The nick is made on 10nm process technology while offering legacy radio support. Apart from 5G, the nick may also support older standards, in the old 2G to the present 4G LTE, and that’s precisely what we predict from 5G modems. It’ll be considered a while until 5G support becomes broadly available, so devices packing 5G chips must be able to connect with 4G systems.
With regards to performance, the Modem 5100 should support speeds as high as 2Gbps within the sub-6GHz settings, and as much as 6Gbps in mmWave settings. The 4G LTE speeds will also get a notable bump, from 1.2Gbps to at least one.6Gbps. They are theoretical speeds, obviously, so actual mileage can vary in tangible-existence conditions.
Samsung states the 5G modem is going to be open to customers, including its mobile division through the finish of 2018, but no actual brands are pointed out.
While Samsung already confirmed that it’ll launch a 5G phone the coming year, it’s unlikely to determine a 5G iPhone debut when next fall, thinking about what Apple did previously.
